This candle was inspired by the ancient Germanic celebration of Yule. Yule is a celebration that welcomes the Winter Solstice and honors the beginning of the return of the Sun. In the tradition of Yule, an Evergreen tree was decorated, a symbol of The Tree of Life and adorned with ornaments to honor Gods and Goddesses alike. In the Celtic tradition, hearth fires burned all season long as a form of protection and warmth. Many of the traditions we celebrate today in conjunction with what we call Christmas hail from the ancient festivities of Yule. Yule is quite literally a celebration of the re-birth of the Sun and an ushering in of the lightest half of the year. It's the Sun's birthday! As such, gifts are exchanged - obviously.
While we recognize Red and Green as the typical colors of the season, in the tradition of Yule, Red is representative of the Holly King (the duality of the Oak King), honoring he who reigns from Midsummer until December 21st when the Oak King, who promises Spring and Summer, returns to his domain. Green, represents the Oak King who ushers in the light. Your candle is topped with Red Garnet and Tumbled Emerald to honor these two dualities and the point at which they meet- the center of the starburst in your candle. Red Garnet brings warmth and confidence to your energy while the Tumbled Emerald serves to re-energize, re-inspire and invigorate your auric field. The Aura Quartz in your candle is indicative of the purity of freshly fallen snow and the light it reflects. Even in the darkest of seasons, the smallest of light can shine brighter than any other time of year because of the gorgeous reflective snow. It was placed in your candle to serve as a reminder of Hope. That even in the darkest of times, a glimmer of light is available to us if we look closely enough.
I chose this scent profile for two reasons: Peppermint calms and purifies. During this chaotic time of year, we can all use a bit of calm. Chocolate has been offered to the God's for centuries and makes an appearance here as an offering to The Holly King and The Oak King as they retreat and move into their respective spheres. Also- who doesn't love some chocolate? ;)
LASTLY- There is a different crystal at the bottom every candle. I asked Spirit to guide the crystals to who needed them most. Just like a wrapped present on Christmas- you never know what you're gunna get!
Now, it's time to light your candle. Know that as you do, you are participating in a tradition that is more ancient than the written word: making fire. Fire brings warmth, food, hope, life- it is also the destructor- burning, disintegrating, ravaging. During this season it brings with it the tidings of the Sun, of warmth, of hope and of new beginnings. Happy Yule!
