Tarot, Mediumship, Psychic Readings... What's the difference?
This is a question I get asked a LOT and it's a great question. What does it mean to be a psychic medium? Are all psychics mediums? Are all mediums...psychic?
Let's break it down, people!
Let's start simple. What's a medium?
Wikipedia defines mediumship as "the practice of purportedly mediating communication between spirits of the dead and living human being".
I take issue with the word 'purportedly' because it means, allegedly. We're definitely talking to dead people here, folks. No doubt about it. Mediumship is just that simple.... Mediums talk to dead people; People who were once alive here in the physical world and now are 'crossed over'. Many Mediums have the ability to connect with other beings beyond the veil such as spirit guides, animals, dieties and beings from other galaxies/dimensions.
So... what's a psychic?
Again, Wiki defines psychics like this: "A psychic is a person who claims to use extrasensory perception to identify information hidden from the normal senses, particularly involving telepathy or clairvoyance, or who performs acts that are apparently inexplicable by natural laws."
Confused? Me too. Here's how I think of it: A psychic is able to tap into energy. They might be tapping into your energy or the energy of the collective to ascertain information they could not have known otherwise. For example, you meet your friend for coffee and she says, "Did you just book a vacation to Hawaii?" And lo and behold, though you haven't told her yet, you did book a vacation to Hawaii. Your friend was experiencing what we call a 'psychic hit'. She was able to pluck that energetic information out of the ether and relay it to you. Psychics can often give you insight to relationships, self-improvement, your career path etc. They will typically not be communicating with the dead to receive this information.
Now, here's the fun part. All mediums are psychic but not all psychics are mediums. Read that again. In other words, if you can talk to dead people, you can also probably tap into energy... but just because you tap into energy doesn't necessarily mean you also speak with the dead. In all honesty, I've never met a "pure" psychic.... someone who doesn't also communicate with Spirit in another way aside from reading energy, but I'm sure they exist.
These labels cross and criss-cross and cross again when it comes to individuals- however, knowing these terms can be super helpful when deciding what kind of reading to get. Because Tarot cards deal with energy, a psychic or a medium may use them as a tool to communicate with the energy and Spirit around them. Tarot cards are typically used to retrieve information or guidance in some aspect of your life and can be a really clear way to receive messages. For some clients, the Tarot cards can be an incredibly validating experience. Especially for those that like a visual aid. Psychics and Mediums alike use different divination tools to get information from the other side, the Tarot is just one of those tools.
Ultimately, psychics, mediums and energy workers of all kinds are like radios. They're attuned to a frequency that most of us aren't. Could you tune yourself to that frequency and pick up energy on that wavelength? Absolutely. In my humble opinion, I believe that everyone has some psychic ability that can be honed if the desire is there. I do think that some people are born with a propensity for psychic work and that some of us have it sprung on us throughout our lives - but it is always a choice (though some of us may not feel that way sometimes, can I get an 'AMEN'). If you don't feel you have a psychic inclination but want to learn- don't be dissuaded. With dedication, consistency and a desire you can accomplish anything. If you don't feel pulled to psychic work but LOVE getting readings, hopefully now you have a better idea of the lingo being used when you book your readings.
Okay, Schools over ;).
